I thought: I can draw, I can be funny, why don’t I have a go at producing some cartoons? Proved a lot harder than I anticipated. You need a style and as a tyro I didn’t have time to develop one. Anyway, I sent the four gags here first to Punch magazine because it was still going then. They rejected them – and the magazine itself closed a mere two weeks later (shades of BWL!). So then I tried Private Eye, but with the same result. Between you and me, I might try Private Eye again one day. I think enough time has passed…
The caricatures were another little experiment and I was rather pleased with the results, but again there was nowhere for this to go really. Strictly one-offs only. But I sure enjoyed using those fine-tipped technical drawing pens, so crisp, so detailed on thick glossy paper. My favourite finish. Art can be a very sensual experience.
